Canvas
Canvas by OWCOL is the learning management system used for OWCOL-hosted courses. This supplement covers coursework, grades, and instructor visibility.
01Scope
This supplement applies to Canvas by OWCOL, reachable at canvas.inactiveimmortal.com. It sits on top of the OWCOL General Terms and the OWCOL Privacy Policy, both of which apply in full. Where this supplement and the General Terms conflict, this supplement controls — for this service only.
02What this service is
Canvas by OWCOL is a self-hosted deployment of the Canvas learning management system at canvas.inactiveimmortal.com. It is used to publish course material, collect assignments, run quizzes and discussions, and record grades.
It is an instructional tool, not the system of record for official academic outcomes. Where a discrepancy exists, records in OWCOL SIS or an official transcript govern.
03Access and accounts
Accounts are provisioned by OWCOL or by the institution running a course, and authenticate through OWCOL SSO. Enrollment in a course is granted by an instructor or administrator; there is no self-enrollment unless a course explicitly enables it.
Roles — student, teacher, teaching assistant, observer, administrator — determine what you can see and do. Do not attempt to obtain a role you have not been granted.
Accounts for learners under 13 are created only at the request of a school or a parent/guardian, who supervises that account's use.
04Service-specific rules
In addition to the acceptable-use rules in the General Terms, when using Canvas you agree not to:
- Submit work that is not your own, or otherwise violate the academic integrity rules of your course or institution. OWCOL does not adjudicate academic integrity — your instructor and institution do — but we will honor their access requests.
- Share, republish, or resell course materials, question banks, quiz content, or recordings outside the course without the instructor's permission. Course content may be copyrighted by the instructor or a third party.
- Attempt to view, alter, or delete another user's submissions, grades, or private messages.
- Interfere with a quiz or exam — including circumventing time limits, access codes, or lockdown settings.
- Upload material unrelated to coursework, or use course file storage as general-purpose file hosting. Use OWCOL Office for that.
- Post another student's personal information, work, or grades.
Visibility
Your instructors and course administrators can see your submissions, quiz attempts, grades, discussion posts, and course activity — including page views and access timestamps. OWCOL administrators can see the same data when operating or troubleshooting the system. Do not treat Canvas as a private space.
05Your data here
Canvas holds coursework you submit, discussion and message content, quiz responses, grades and feedback, and course activity logs. Much of this constitutes an education record; it is handled as described in the Privacy Policy.
Grades and feedback are entered by instructors, not by OWCOL. Disputes about a grade go to your instructor or institution, not to the administrator.
Download anything you want to keep — submissions, feedback, and files — before a course concludes. Concluded courses may be archived or removed after the retention period in the Privacy Policy.
06Availability and maintenance
Canvas is provided on the same reasonable-effort, no-SLA basis as every other OWCOL service. See Availability and changes in the General Terms.
Maintenance is scheduled outside instructional hours where possible, but no window is guaranteed. Do not rely on Canvas being reachable at a deadline. Technical problems with Canvas do not automatically extend an assignment deadline; that decision belongs to your instructor.
07Ending your use
Ending your enrollment in a course does not by itself delete your submissions, which may be retained as part of the course record. To have your Canvas account closed, email admin@owcol.com; note that OWCOL may be required to retain education records on behalf of an institution.
OWCOL may suspend or terminate access to Canvas under section 9 of the General Terms.
08Upstream software
Canvas by OWCOL is an independently operated deployment of Canvas LMS, an open-source project. OWCOL is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Instructure, Inc., and Instructure, Inc. provides no support or warranty for this deployment. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.
Upstream updates may change or remove features without notice from OWCOL.
